Notebooks and Albums

Libre Livre makes notebooks, pamphlets and albums using historical techniques and a range of  materials, traditional and modern.
Single Section notebooks

The craft of bookbinding, established in England long before the Norman conquest, has continually evolved to meet the challenges of the times.  Early volumes,  vellum pages held between wooden boards, were hand written by monks and scribes.   With the introduction of paper around 1309 smaller, more light weight books began to be developed evolving eventually into the paperbacks on sale today.

At Libre Livre we combine the best of the old with the benefits of the new.  Books are hand sewn using the finest linen thread and covers are made from wood, paper and leather.

All our products are hand made and individually priced.   Single section notebooks start at £5.00 and our range of albums start at £15

Varied Board Materials

Decorative papers from Europe and Japan are used for the bright and attractive covers of some of the notebooks and albums shown on this page.

Board materials such as metal, wood or vellum are used to create books with their own unique personalities.  The example shown to the left has boards made from textured copper.  Other metals used have included zinc, silver, brass and aluminium.

Exposed Spine Sewing

Bindings with exposed spine sewing are based on the structure used by the Copts in ancient Egypt to make the earliest bound volumes in the ancient world.  This simple but ingenius structure permits these volumes to open completely flat making them ideally suited for all kinds of notes and sketches.

Albums
We make a variety of albums, some covered in our own marbled papers like the one shown here.  We believe that your memories are worth treasuring; when you buy our albums and journals you are investing in your memories for generations to come.  Our albums, journals and noteboooks are an investment for you, your chilrden, and your grandchildren....Other styles include Japanese bindings and photo albums, all made from acid free paper to ensure your memories dont fade away.

Limp Vellum Bindings
Limp vellum bindings are sometimes thought of as the medieval “filofax”.  They were used by merchants from earliest times until the 16th century for keeping their records and accounts. Libre Livre's selection includes volumes covered with re-cycled vellum documents and Scandinavian style bindings with firm wooden spines.

To get a proper appreciation of these and other imaginative bindings why not visit our workshop to see for yourself...
