In 2009 Libre Livre was proud to be
appointed
as the official UK retailer for Marbled Arts, a business based near
Florence, that specialises in the ancient Florentine craft of
marbling. Marbled Arts, owned and run by second
generation marbler Laura Berretti uses traditional techniques, which
take years of experimentation and study to master, to produce
classic marbled papers ideal for bookbinding. |

Each sheet of paper is marbled individually, so although patterns and colours are carefully matched, no two sheets will ever be precisely the same. The process of hand marbling has several stages: first, colours are sprinkled on to a bath of viscous solution made from seaweed, which prevents the colours blending freely together. Designs are formed by combing, raking or gently stirring the surface to form distinctive patterns. A sheet of paper is carefully rolled on to the solution, and the pattern transferred to it as if by magic. Finally the sheet is removed from the bath and left to dry. |

Great skill is required to produce fine papers. Not only do the blends of colours and intrictae designs take time to learn, but even in the hands of an experienced marbler colours and solutions react differently according to atmospheric conditions and temperature. |

Marbled Arts also produces hand
decorated clay marbles. Each brilliantly coloured marble has its
own pattern, giving it a unique identity of its own. Libre Livre offers sets of these beautiful marbles to our customers. |
Letterpress Cards |
|
|
Libre Livre sells a
range
of greeting cards produced by Papermumpress, a Californinan business
run by letterpress printer Sharon Shin. Sharon's cards are all made using her own designs. The designs are transferred to printing blocks which are clamped into a traditional printing press. Ink is then aerated, "loosened" and applied to an inking disc on the press from where it is collected by rollers which run across the surface of the block applying a thin coating of ink. A card is then pressed against the block, under great pressure to ensure the image prints throughly and evenly. |
|
If a second colour is
required the
ink is then cleaned off the press, the first printing allowed to dry
and the process repeated.
